Remembering Your Parents
I have never feared death or looked at it in a negative manner. It is after all a real part of the life we live. My parents always told me “You are promised two things and two things only in life; the first is “life” and you were given that the day you were born, the second is death, and you have no means of knowing when that will happen. Remember everything else you do between these two points in your life is your own expression of life”. Further they encouraged me to make my own choices, and of course accept the consequences if I was wrong, and live life to the fullest.
Thus having lost both parents before I even turned 30, the most recent my dear mother, the grief and anguish that sets in is indescribable. Many times have I been to funerals of really close friends and people that I got to know through out life, and even many relatives. However until you loose you own parent (or sibling) do you actually get to grips with that heart wrenching agony of despair that you feel. You seem to be inconsolable and the world stops making sense.
To be honest I cannot imagine loosing my spouse if this is the grief I have after loosing a parent!
However as my parents had taught me, I am taking life by the horns and making choices. When my father passed away, and I was a lot more naïve, the typical funeral rights were done and a cremation ceremony was chosen as the best way. However when that “wooden box” (The funeral home calls it an urn, but I think it is just a box) arrived with the ashes, I was somewhat disappointed.
Is this what Life is all about, to end up in a “wooden box” on the mantle piece? Don’t get me wrong I understand the rights and needs to pay respects etc, but in a wooden box?
So after my mom passed I went out searching for better vessels to keep the ashes in. And WOW, was I surprised to find the HUGE amount of options. So I am imparting some of my findings, and I am having my dad “re-boxed” into a more suitable Urn.
